The Bangor Area Stormwater Group (BASWG) is a collaboration of Bangor, Brewer, Hampden, Milford, Old Town, Orono, Veazie, Eastern Maine Community College, Maine Air National Guard, University of Maine Augusta – Bangor and University of Maine to use public education and sound science to improve regional water quality through collaborative stormwater management in the Greater Bangor Urbanized Areas.
The BASWG organization is a collaboration of regulated entities working join
tly to support individual MS4 compliance with six minimum control measures:
- Education & Outreach
- Public Involvement
- Illicit Discharge Detection & Elimination
- Construction
- Post Construction
- Good Housekeeping/Pollution Prevention
Over the last ten years, BASWG has completed more than thirty regionalization projects, secured more than $350,000 in grant funds to support this work, and achieved well over $750,000 in taxpayer savings for its member communities. Some of our recent projects include:
- Collaborating on developing a Statewide Road Salt Reduction Plan.
- Annual Street & Stream Cleanups in each community and on every campus.
- Annual stenciling campaigns to raise public awareness of stormwater pollution.

BASWG created a bus wrap to be displayed on community buses in and around Bangor. The bus educates about stormwater pollution, featuring characters from our educational videos.
