One of the benefits of living in a small town is the chance to know your neighbors. The activities sponsored by the Veazie Parks & Recreation Department are more than recreational opportunities, they are, in fact, crucial in building a sense of community.
Recreation – Our programs are fun! Kids have a chance to learn new games and songs, try a few crafts, and make some new friends in the After School and Summer Recreation Programs. There are beach trips and bowling, movies and munchies, summer swimming and plenty of smiles. Adults also enjoy a workout and the camaraderie of the evening sports programs including basketball, softball and volleyball.
Education – Learning is fun with Veazie Rec. Our sports programs teach children the basics of soccer, basketball and baseball in addition to stressing the importance of supporting the other players and working as a team. In the summer the kids have swimming lessons and try their hand at tennis. The recreation staff works consistently to reinforce important ideals such as sharing, courtesy and respect for others.
Connections – Recreation activities offer Veazie residents lots of opportunities to connect with others as we build our sense of community. In February, Parks & Recreation hosts the annual Valentine Family Dance - a fun time for children and parents, with hot music and cool door prizes. Dance with your neighbor, meet your daughter’s classmates and their parents- it’s all about bonding. Chaos is the word at the Spring Extravaganza, where parents might be swarmed by the throng of kids racing to find every colored egg hidden in the school yard. Parents are bound to meet someone new here as the mob moves by!
The Halloween Carnival, a 20-year tradition in town, is our biggest and most popular event. The Recreation Department believes it is important to offer a safe alternative to Trick or Treating. The children who come to this party are never disappointed, and adult volunteers enjoy meeting kids of all ages as they race from game to game. It is not uncommon to see three generations of families at the party - all smiling! Everyone loves meeting friends and neighbors at the Halloween Carnival.
Recreation’s volunteer coaches continue the teaching and the fun. They are your neighbors, your son’s best friend’s father or perhaps one of your children’s teachers. They volunteer because they love sports and they love children, and they too, are building community connections.
Get involved! Volunteer at our parties, play ball, make some new friends, or dance with your daughter – Recreation invites you to join our community.
